Welcome to Stevens Point Curling Club Current and Future Members:
It is that time of year again. With the cooler weather, we can start thinking about the upcoming 2013-2014 Curling season. As you may have noticed from the frequent emails this summer, we have been very busy. We started the summer thinking we were only going to update the club house by painting the walls, replacing the carpet and getting some new furniture. As with any old building, everything we touched required more work than expected. The list of improvements includes:
- Removal of wainscoting; this highlighted a problem with water damage to drywall on north wall so we had to replace insulation and drywall of most of the wall.
- Replaced window above bar; this brought to light more water damage to the exterior sheathing which had to be replaced along with ~ 6ft of cedar siding.
- New exterior door by the bar, new paint everywhere except for kitchen area and bathrooms, new couches and new carpet everywhere.
- New alcove area in the storage shed – keep food and beverages cold but not frozen.
- New shed for scraper so that we can drive the scraper in without taking the blade off
- New flat screen TV
This could not have happened without volunteer effort. There is still a lot to do before the season starts. With the bulk of the large efforts behind us, there are many bite sized (and larger) tasks to be completed. If you have an opportunity, please take the time to volunteer to complete one of these tasks.
We expect to start the compressor around Oct 7-8 and should have ice around Oct 21. We have some open houses and Learn to Curl events planned for Saturday Oct 26 from 3-6pm and Tuesday Oct 29 from 6-9pm. We will also be resuscitating the Silver Dustpan Bonspiel for new and old curlers on Nov 1-2, 2013
The Board has determined that our 2013-14 dues schedule will remain the same as last year. As required by our insurance provider, we will continue to require a signed liability waiver and, as in past years, at least 50% of your dues be paid prior to “setting foot” on the ice. As an incentive, all members who have completed their forms and paid their full dues by October 18th will be eligible for a drawing for $50 toward curling equipment or apparel.
SIGNUP NOW: Forms for club registration, league signup and liability waiver are enclosed. We now have leagues every day of the week. We have open leagues on Mon and Tue, Women on Wed, Men on Thu, Mixed on Fri, Day-Timers on Tues and Thu, High School on Mon, Tue and Thu, junior curling on Sundays, college intramural league on Sun. Leagues will be starting week of November 4th. Please get your forms returned to us by October 30th … it takes time to assemble teams and establish schedules.
DATES: Two dates have been scheduled for “Learn to Curl” (open house) events. They are Saturday October 26, 2013 from 3-6PM; and, Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 6-9PM. Invite your friends and neighbors to give curling a try.
